After three generations in the dairy business, the Boersma family was pressed to sell their cows as government regulations grew too burdensome. Brothers Travis and Dane bought a double-head espresso machine and began experimenting with 100 pounds of coffee beans, eventually peddling drink samples from a pushcart along the railroad tracks in their hometown of Grants Pass, Oregon. Within a month, it was clear that the duo had created something special and Dutch Bros Coffee was born.
Today, Dutch Bros Coffee is the country’s largest, privately held drive-thru coffee company, with more than 300 locations in seven western states and over 9,000 employees. Its coffee kiosks serve specialty coffee drinks, smoothies, freezes, teas, a private-label Dutch Bros Blue Rebel energy drink and nitrogen-infused cold brew coffee. A proprietary three-bean blend is still roasted to perfection from its Grants Pass headquarters. Meanwhile, Dutch Bros, its owner/operators and the Love Abounds Foundation remain committed to the community, donating more than $5.8 million annually to nonprofit organizations and local causes.
